Public sector finance is a different discipline, and we recruit for it as one.
The single biggest mistake made in Wellington finance hiring is treating a public sector finance role as a commercial one with a different logo on it. It is not, and candidates know the difference even when the job ad does not.
Public sector finance in New Zealand runs on appropriations rather than on profit. The reporting framework is different, the accounting standards applied to public benefit entities are different, and the questions a finance business partner in an agency answers are different from the ones asked in a listed company. Someone who has spent a decade in commercial finance can absolutely make the move, but they need to be briefed honestly about what changes, and the hiring manager needs to be realistic about the ramp up.

The Wellington finance year, and why timing decides your shortlist.
Wellington finance hiring is more predictable than most people treat it. Budget, estimates, annual reporting and the 30 June year end all land at roughly the same points every year, and they produce roughly the same demand every year.
What follows from that is simple. When everyone needs a management accountant or a finance business partner in the same six week window, the available pool is the same pool, and the organisations that briefed early get the choice. The ones that started late get whoever is left. This is the most common and the most avoidable reason a Wellington finance search disappoints.
The same logic applies to programme funded roles. When a business case is approved, the finance capability to support it is usually needed immediately and is often not budgeted for as a permanent hire, which is why fixed-term and contract finance work is such a large share of the Wellington market.
