Accounting, Finance & Corporate, Wellington

Accounting, finance & corporate recruitment in Wellington.

We recruit accounting, finance and corporate talent across Wellington, for government agencies, crown entities, professional services and private sector businesses.

Our Wellington office is at Level 6, 11 Chews Lane, Wellington 6011.

Wellington finance hiring has its own rhythm: budget cycles, appropriations, machinery of government changes and programme funding all shape when roles open and how fast they need to be filled. We recruit permanent, fixed-term and contract roles with that context built in.

Our consultants know the difference between a public sector management accountant role and a commercial one, and they brief candidates accordingly. Everyone on your shortlist has been interviewed and referenced by us first.

From accounts payable to CFO, and from HR advisors to executive assistants and legal counsel, we cover the corporate side of Wellington organisations end to end.

Public sector finance is a different discipline, and we recruit for it as one.

The single biggest mistake made in Wellington finance hiring is treating a public sector finance role as a commercial one with a different logo on it. It is not, and candidates know the difference even when the job ad does not.

Public sector finance in New Zealand runs on appropriations rather than on profit. The reporting framework is different, the accounting standards applied to public benefit entities are different, and the questions a finance business partner in an agency answers are different from the ones asked in a listed company. Someone who has spent a decade in commercial finance can absolutely make the move, but they need to be briefed honestly about what changes, and the hiring manager needs to be realistic about the ramp up.

We recruit both sides of that line, for agencies, crown entities and their delivery partners as well as for professional services firms and private sector businesses across the city. Because we work both, we can tell you whether the person in front of you will genuinely land in your environment, and we brief candidates properly on what they are walking into rather than selling them a version of the role that falls apart in week three.

The Wellington finance year, and why timing decides your shortlist.

Wellington finance hiring is more predictable than most people treat it. Budget, estimates, annual reporting and the 30 June year end all land at roughly the same points every year, and they produce roughly the same demand every year.

What follows from that is simple. When everyone needs a management accountant or a finance business partner in the same six week window, the available pool is the same pool, and the organisations that briefed early get the choice. The ones that started late get whoever is left. This is the most common and the most avoidable reason a Wellington finance search disappoints.

The same logic applies to programme funded roles. When a business case is approved, the finance capability to support it is usually needed immediately and is often not budgeted for as a permanent hire, which is why fixed-term and contract finance work is such a large share of the Wellington market. We keep pre-screened finance and corporate people available for exactly that, so we can move when your funding does.

    Where we recruit across Wellington.

Our office is on Chews Lane in the central city, walking distance from most of the organisations we recruit for.

We recruit across the CBD and Te Aro and through Thorndon and the parliamentary precinct, where the majority of agency and crown entity finance and corporate teams sit. We also cover the Hutt Valley, including Petone and Lower Hutt, and recruit into Porirua and up the Kapiti Coast.

Wellington is small enough that people move between organisations without moving suburbs, which has a consequence worth knowing: candidate networks here are tight, and confidential searches need to be run properly. When a role is sensitive, we run it as a genuine confidential search rather than advertising it and hoping nobody joins the dots.

    Questions

    Wellington recruitment FAQs.

What finance and corporate roles do you recruit in Wellington?

Accounts payable and receivable, payroll, financial and management accountants, systems accountants, financial and commercial analysts, financial controllers, finance managers and CFOs, procurement, plus corporate roles across people and culture, legal, communications, marketing and executive support.

Do you recruit for government agencies in Wellington?

Yes. A large part of our Wellington work is with public sector agencies, crown entities and their delivery partners, alongside private sector and professional services clients.

Do you place contract and fixed-term finance staff?

Yes. We recruit permanent, fixed-term and contract finance and corporate roles, and keep pre-screened candidates available for year end, parental leave cover, system changes and funded programmes.

    Where is your Wellington office?

Level 6, 11 Chews Lane, Wellington 6011. We also have an Auckland office at Level 1, 87 Albert Street, Auckland 1010 and recruit nationwide.

Do you provide Wellington salary benchmarking?

Yes. Our consultants share live market rates when we take a brief, and our salary and rate guide covers accounting, finance, corporate and technology roles across New Zealand.

Do you recruit finance people who have worked in the public sector?

Yes, and we recruit commercial finance people too. A large share of our Wellington work is with agencies, crown entities and their delivery partners, so we know the difference between a public sector finance role and a commercial one, and we brief candidates accordingly rather than letting them find out later.

Can you run a confidential finance search in Wellington?

Yes. Wellington is a small market with tight candidate networks, so sensitive roles need to be handled properly rather than advertised and hoped about. We run confidential and executive searches through direct approach, and we are careful about what is disclosed and when.

What are Wellington finance salaries doing at the moment?

They move with the funding cycle as much as with the wider market. Our consultants give you current market rates when we take the brief, and our published Salary and Rate Guide has indicative permanent salary and contract rate ranges for finance and corporate roles filtered to Wellington.
