Finding Your Next Superstar: Why a Recruitment Agency Could Be Your Secret Weapon

When it’s time to hire, it’s not uncommon to attempt the search yourself first. A quick 15-minute write up, copy+paste into SEEK and TradeMe Jobs, and maybe into a couple of Facebook groups, and then wait for the candidates to arrive. What you didn’t anticipate however is just how many candidates would apply. The first 5-10 trickle in and it’s exciting to see people applying, but before you know it you’re waist deep in over 100 CV’s and Cover Letters, and a steadily growing pile of work in the other corner demanding your attention. Not to mention people sending follow-up emails to ensure you received their application! This is only the start of the search too! So, what can you do? Well, here’s why you need a recruitment agency, and how to choose the right agency for you.

Why you need a recruitment agency

When recruiting yourself it’s not uncommon to receive over 100 CVs for a role that’s being advertised – unless we’re talking something super niche like a PetFood Taster – and each of these requires time to review. Even if THE 1 is in that pile, that’s 99 other CV’s and 99 Cover Letters that deserve respect by being read, processed, and ultimately rejected. Not to mention scheduling interviews, follow-up interviews, balancing salary negotiations, conducting thorough checks of qualifications and work history, and navigating the complexities of contracts, counter-offers and start dates. All-in-all, this is a process that requires significant time investment, and an understanding of the market you’re hiring from.

ROI is important with any hiring decision, and you want to be sure that the person you’re bringing on board has the skills, drive, and dedication to contribute to your organisation. Whilst using a recruitment agency does have a cost attached to it, it de-risks the whole hiring process and saves time safe in the knowledge you’re receiving a candidate who is thoroughly screened and who will align to your business, and reputable agency’s will provide a replacement guarantee for peace of mind.

Not sure how to choose the agency that’s right for you?

You’re the buyer so be fussy about who you engage. As with any industry, there are ample suppliers in the field to choose from, and so undertaking some due diligence is essential to identify which agencies align to your business morals and drive. You engage a recruiter to de-risk the recruitment process for you, not to sell you a person.

  • Look for transparency and ease of contact. In working with an agency, you’ll want a partner who is by your side and is able to assist when you need to hire.Look for someone who can grasp the fundamentals of your business and can piece together what you need and what a new hire can bring to contribute to your existing team.
  • Look for employer branding. You don’t have time to read through 100-page backstories and foundational information, and so need a brand that speaks to you. Look for an agency that is modern, concise and has the finesse to represent your own brand in advertising roles.
  • Look for market specialisations. Generalist recruitment agencies do exist; however you’re not guaranteed the same level of quality as a specialised agency. At Find, for example, we specialise in the recruitment of Accounting,Finance, Risk, Corporate, IT, Digital, Technology and Business Support professionals across New Zealand. Whilst we’ll endeavour to help every client who comes our way, if it lies outside of our wheelhouse then we’ll let you know and guide you to someone who can help.
  • Look for a reliable partner. You have a dedicated doctor you see, a dedicated accountant, lawyer, and builder you trust when you need professional support in your life. So it makes sense that your business needs a reliable recruitment partner. Seek out the consultants who just get your business, and who can rep you in the market for finding top candidates.
  • Look for relatability. You should be able to envision working with the agency you’re engaging with. Feel them out to see if you align and request a meeting to establish a connection in person. Take them up on their offer for a free coffee (hint hint)or be bold and request a meeting at their office so that you can establish a feel for their brand.
  • Look for businesses they work with. A great tell of an agency is the type of clients they take on and their ongoing relationships with these clients. Whilst working with an agency who covers every business in an industry comes with risk, there is also great reward as they know who’s who in the industry and are in constant contact with great candidates.
  • Finally, look for the full package. End-to-end recruitment is not always guaranteed (well, it is with us – we do every facet of the process), and so it’s important to know that ahead of time. End-to-end recruitment means we cover off everything from taking the brief and establishing advertising, through to interviews, quality screening and probity checks (criminal record, qualifications and the like). You work with a guaranteed Consultant who supports you from start to finish.
