Surviving and thriving as AI becomes a regular topic at work

Technology seeps into every aspect of our lives, changing the way we perform day to day tasks, and how we behave and operate. This affects all industries from transport, education, healthcare, the list goes on. New tech is ever evolving and facilitating more and more advanced features, first it was mobile phones, then computers and the internet, but today, we are faced with the rise of AI.

Here, we discuss what artificial intelligence is, helping you to better understand how it might impact your day-to-day life, and the impact it has on different jobs and industries, making some jobs obsolete while also creating new ones that are yet to be discovered. Many employees will have to adapt as it's likely AI will lead to job transformation rather than outright elimination, so we'll guide you through how to navigate job disruption and embrace collaboration with this new technology.

The rapid advancements of AI has brought artificial intelligence to the forefront of everyday life. From chatbots, to virtual assistants and data analysis automation, AI is transforming the way we work within our organisations. With the rise of the latest AI tools and their abilities developing rapidly with systems such as DALL·E 2 being able to generate realistic images and art simply by giving it a description of what you want, and chat bots being able to do anything from write code to reliably answering any questions you ask it, it’s crucial for everybody to not only be able to survive this new wave of technology but also thrive in this evolving landscape.


Understanding AI:

Artificial intelligence refers to the simulation of human intelligence processes demonstrated by machines, toper form tasks commonly associated with human intelligence. AI technologies aim to simulate human intelligence and automate processes, leading to increased efficiency, productivity, and innovation in the workplace.
AI has been making its way into our lives with increasing enthusiasm, coming a long way from simple online shopping systems and GPS applications. Systems such as chat GPT have adapted to even operate as your very own consultant, being able to act as a virtual vet, personal trainer, resume coach, nutritionist, marketing consultant, or a social media strategist; the potential is limitless. There are various types of AI with different purposes, one being machine learning, a branch of computer science and AI that focuses on the use of data and algorithms to imitate the way humans learn. This is seen mostly on training computer systems that learn from data and improve performance over time without being explicitly programmed.
Natural Language Processing, another branch of AI deals with how computers understand and interact with human language. NLP helps computers understand what we say or write and responding in a way that we can understand, this type of AI is what powers tools like Siri or online customer service chatbots. Another AI variant is Robotic Process Automation, involving software that is used in bots, to automate repetitive rule-based tasks. This involves tasks like filling out forms or copying data between systems faster with fewer errors.


Impact of AI on Job Roles:

It is inevitable that AI will transform some traditional job roles and responsibilities, making some job functions obsolete while also creating new and exciting jobs as it changes the industries that it’s adopted into.
Artificial Intelligence is revolutionising traditional job roles and responsibilities across various industries. AI technology like robotic process automation can automate repetitive mundane tasks that have been traditionally performed by humans, freeing up employees to focus on more complex and strategic aspects of work.
AI algorithms can process and analyse vast amounts of data, much faster and more efficiently than any human could dream of doing. This enables more informed, data-driven decision making. Fields like finance/accounting, healthcare, and marketing can leverage AI powered tools to extract insights, identify patterns and make accurate predictions helping to achieve improved outcomes with less tedious work.
AI can act as a powerful tool to augment human experience e.g., in healthcare AI algorithms can analyse medical data and help doctors to diagnose diseases or recommend treatments. In legal professions AI powered software can assist with legal research and document analysis, improving efficiency and accuracy.AI in general has better speed and accuracy with processing data, processing automation, has enhanced data analysis ability, and is able to continuously learn and improve based on new data. If properly implemented and managed, AI has the potential to significantly transform job roles, improve productivity, and drive innovation in the workplace.


Navigating Job Disruption:

While AI technologies may automate certain tasks, they often lead to job transformation rather than outright job elimination. As routine repetitive tasks become automated it opens opportunities for employees to focus on high value work that requires a human touch, involving creativity, critical thinking, problem solving, and emotional intelligence, all qualities that AI doesn’t current have. With the huge changes AI is bringing to many industries, its not just making some tasks obsolete, but also causing new job functions to appear. The need for AI trainers, data analysts, AI system developers, and ethical AI specialists has emerged. By proactively adapting to these emerging roles, individuals can position themselves for growth and remain valuable contributors in the AI-driven workforce. As technology is constantly evolving, it’s important to have a life long learning mindset if you don’t want to get left behind, continuous up skilling and re-skilling enables you to stay adaptable, acquire new skills, and remain relevant in the evolving job market. Stay informed about skills that are in high demand in an AI driven job market.


Embracing AI Collaboration:

Human AI collaboration offers the opportunity to leverage the strengths of both AI and humans, recognising that humans possess unique cognitive abilities such as creativity, empathy, and complex reasoning, while AI systems excel in processing vast amounts of data, pattern recognition, and performing repetitive tasks with speed and accuracy. By combining these capabilities, humans and AI can work together to achieve better outcomes across various industries. Successful AI human collaborations have already emerged in several sectors, showcasing the potential of this partnership. In the medical field AI algorithms can analyse medical images, such as X-rays or MRI scans, to identify abnormalities, while radiologists provide their expertise to validate and interpret the results. In financial institutions can leverage AI for tasks like fraud detections, risk assessment, and algorithmic trading. However, human financial experts play a crucial role in interpreting and validating the outputs generated by AI systems.
