As AI continues to grow, so does the paranoia around the loss of career paths and the shift from the status quo. However, change can bring many exciting things – amongst them, new career paths and opportunities to step into the industries of the future. We’ve compiled 7 of the coolest, and most logical careers we’ve seen listed, or that we’ve heard whispers of, so that you can be ahead of the game in your tech career decisions.
Let’s start with the salary, as this future role is currently offering up to about US$320,000 for some locations. TheChatGPT Prompt Engineer will definitely be a first of its kind type of role, as businesses seek out exceptional individuals capable of mastering prompts and inputs, to get the most out of AI. As new AI platforms appear, we can also expect new jobs for those platforms to arise also - requiring prompt geniuses to generate written text, imagery, and much more! Although we’re yet to see any roles of this capacity in New Zealand, they’re likely not too far away!
Social media, viral posts and the nature of the world wide web are known for one thing in common: their memory. ‘Once online, forever online’ will be a familiar thought process for many, however with the rise of Generation Z, and their awareness of the consequences that can come from a poor digital footprint, things may change. The Digital Removalist may become an in-demand job as people seek to expunge silly mistakes they made in the past and give themselves a clean slate. The role of this specialist would be to scour the background of the web to track content related to an individual or business, and thereby remove or address it. Obviously, complications arise with this but the usage opportunities are endless!
With a tech workforce at our fingertips, capable of doing all of the boring day-to-day activities and tasks for us, it will be essential to have a manager in place to oversee this robotic workforce – cue the Robot Manager. Rostering will take a different form in logistical workflow and output efficiency will be a calculable art, reviving micromanagement for a workforce that rely on it. It's important to note that machine learning is, by and large, still immensely imperfect, and so it will take time before this sort of thing will come to pass.
New roles require new leadership, and what better title for the executive of this future industry than the Chief Automation Officer! Connecting businesses and IT processes will be more important than ever, and these new CAO’s will be in hot demand to help deliver on this uncharted territory. Likely earning top dollars in this relatively uncharted territory, it will be a natural progression for many individuals who are functioning in future-proofed and future-focused jobs.
We’ve all seen the test runs for self-driving vehicles. Always in a controlled scenario and always a bit better than the time prior. Self-driving vehicles have been tested by everyone from former USA President Barack Obama, through to canines, however this technology is very much elusive to the average person. There’ll inevitably be a point where it all launches with gusto and then everyone will want a slice of the action, and then traffic jams might hopefully become a thing of the past (wishful thinking). Testing parameters, uploading road user data and more will become essential to ensuring that vehicles are safe on the roads, and that risk remains low.
An already growing career path in some other countries, an in-house AI engineer is responsible for using AI to enhance the business, improving automation and workflow, and to eliminate unnecessary tasks. We’ve already seen clever AI crop up that can help you keep track in meetings, or locate a particular file in a hurry, so it's easy to imagine what a fully in-house AI employee could do. We could expect to see these sorts of roles arising with larger New Zealand corporations who need someone to take advantage of automation to support their existing workforce.
Some medical procedures are already done remotely, and in many restaurants we’re seeing robots deliver food to the table– so why stop there? Soon, the air may be filled with drones as businesses cotton on to delivering their goods to customers all over the place, swapping out Customs Street congestion, for easy flying in low orbit. It may be sometime before planes are flown without physical pilots in the cockpit, but the possibilities are endless for where the future of careers may lie.
