With the summer holidays now feeling like a distant memory, the tech market in Wellington and Christchurch has maintained a subdued atmosphere as organisations ease back into work during January. However, the fantastic weather has brought a renewed sense of positivity, with people returning to work refreshed and rejuvenated after their time off.

Although it's difficult to predict the trajectory of this year (a clear crystal ball would be handy), the slowdown in the market has led to an increase in the number of applicants for available positions. Nonetheless, certain areas of technology such as developers, engineers and architects continue to face a shortage of candidates. Despite these challenges, there are still ample opportunities for skilled tech workers, and employers are actively seeking individuals with sought-after skills to fill key roles.

On a brighter note, the surge in candidates has introduced us to many talented individuals who were previously not on the market and not in our database, which has been an exciting opportunity to meet and engage with new talent.

While permanent pay rates have remained steady, we have observed a significant decline in contract rates, especially in the projects / transformation space, after reaching peak levels towards the end of 2022 following COVID-19.

Despite the uncertainties of the new year, with the incoming government still finding its footing, there is much to be optimistic about. We are enjoying reconnecting with our clients and candidates, and we are fully prepared to tackle the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in the coming year.
